I saw a comedian do a bit the other day about how disappointing our photos are going to be to future generations. He talked about the epic pictures that past generations took which chronicled significant events in their life and compared that to the terabytes of photos today that populate our camera roll from selfies to what we ate for breakfast.

I’m certainly guilty of that. Sure I’ve got some heartwarming videos of my granddaughter but they’re vastly outnumbered by the screen shots of a meal I cooked or of that day’s letter box word combination.

My youngest son surprised me with a book for Christmas, it’s called Dad, I Want to Hear Your Story - A Father’s Guided Journal to Share His Life & His Love

Here’s a piece from “about this book” - “The Purpose of Dad, I Want to Hear Your Story is to inspire conversations that reconnect us to our families, our pasts and, ultimately ourselves. Sharing with one another helps to build understanding, empathy, and connection.”

If you’ve ever listened to Story Corp you understand the power of sharing some of the things that make you, you.

It’s so easy for me to major in the minors, to fill up my time with activities and tasks that feel urgent or important at the moment but are almost irrelevant if viewed through the perspective of even a few months, much less a few years.

When Ryan was explaining why he had gotten me the book, I realized that there were so many of my dad’s and mom’s stories that I had no idea about. The same is true if I’m looking at old pictures wondering where it was taken and who all of the people in the picture were and my connection to them.

I understand that this may feel like a big departure from food, exercise or recovery and that everyone’s family dynamics are different, but my goal with A Friendly Nudge is to share some of the things that I’m wrestling with or pondering with the aging process in the hope that it will be helpful or interesting for others.

I think you might find one of Jeffrey Mason’s books or exploring the Story Corp App a rewarding endeavor .

One of the things that always binds my family together is our shared love of great food. This week I’m trying to make a reasonable replication of a meal my daughter made.

Salmon with Barbecue Sauce

As you already know by now I usually eyeball measurements when I’m cooking and it probably won’t come as a big surprise that my kids take after their old man and also play with their food. But I think I did a pretty good job of capturing the sauce magic.

Ingredients:

2 lb piece of salmon

⅓ cup almond butter

2 tbsp honey

2 tbsp molasses

2-3 tbsp tamari or soy sauce

2-3 tbsp rice wine vinegar

2 tbsp sriracha

Mix up the sauce ingredients and adjust to taste.

Place the salmon on a parchment paper lined baking sheet and generously cover the salmon with the sauce.

Place in a 400℉ oven and check the temp after 10 minutes for doneness. I was using a thick piece of farmed salmon and mine was at my target of 130℉ after 14 minutes.

I also cooked a tray of asparagus to serve with the salmon for the same time and temperature.

Enjoy!

Now let’s build a week’s worth of exercise snacks to improve your strength, balance and mobility.
